History Paper Symposium 2009

So in the past week I presented my research paper to the History Department at their 2009 Symposium, and attended a luncheon given by the Society of First Families of South Carolina. Chris and I were invited because we were recipients of their scholarship last year. While I got to schmooze with people who can trace their ancestry back to SC's original settlers, I was kind of bored and I couldn't eat much because they served ham. Sure, I should have realized that a southern luncheon would probably contain pork, but still, there's always hope for more. But it was nice to be invited, and the Carolina Yacht Club was really gorgeous.

"I Love College" has become the theme song here at the College for Spring 2009. Not too surprising. But I just can't get it out of my head!
Loving this new artist that I picked up from my sister. Check him out: Joe Purdy.

A Beautiful Day In Charleston

Good Shabbos, and I hope everyone has a good weekend ahead! Today was the first muggy, hot day in Charleston. And while its kind of gross, it also makes me smile. Now it finally feels like summer is near, even though that also means my graduation from college and entrance into the real world. So here's to the good times!

This weekend is going to be a little nuts, from the social aspect. Tomorrow morning I am going to a luncheon for the Society of First Families of South Carolina, who gave me a scholarship last year. I'm excited, but a little intimidated. My Bachelor's Essay advisor, Dr. Nicholas Butler is speaking at the Society's luncheon/meeting, and the Chair of the History Department, Dr. Olejniczak, will be sitting at my table. So I won't be completely alone, but I can guarantee I'll be the youngest person there.

Then tomorrow evening is A Charleston Affair, the last event of "Senior Week" at the College. Just a night of food, live music, and old friends coming back to visit Charleston. Hoping to see a lot of friends there.

Sunday is BEACH DAY! and a cook-out with the Jewish Student Union at Hampton Park.

So there will be more posts soon, hopefully with pictures. And G-d-willing I won't get a sunburn.

Definition of History

No harm's done to history by making it something someone would want to read. - David McCullough

Good lord! You mean, history doesn't have to be boring? Well, that debunks everything :) I am currently working on a history paper which may or may not be interesting to anyone. Sometimes, there's just no way to make Quakers, Baptists, or Catholics fun. Unless they all walk into a bar...

HISTORY, n. An account mostly false, of events mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers mostly knaves, and soldiers mostly fools. - Ambrose Bierce

Procrastination

So, following the trend set by my siblings, I've now set up my own blog.

And yes, it is a form of procrastination. Because who really wants to write a research seminar paper? Even one on the religious experiences of colonists in Maryland and Virginia during the 17th and 18th centuries. I mean, the paper does kick ass so far, but come on. Show me someone who enjoys writing 40-page papers, and I'll show you someone with ABSOLUTELY NO LIFE.
